- Master's degree with 55% marks (or equivalent grade) in Sociology from an Indian University or equivalent foreign degree.
- Must have cleared UGC/CSIR NET or SLET/SET, OR
- Ph.D. degree in Sociology as per UGC 2009/2016 regulations (with specific conditions for pre-July 11, 2009 registrants), OR
- Ph.D. degree from a foreign university ranked among top 500 by QS, THE, or ARWU Shanghai rankings.
- For pre-July 11, 2009 Ph.D. candidates: Must have regular mode Ph.D., external examiner evaluation, open viva, 2 research papers (1 in refereed journal), and 2 conference presentations sponsored by UGC/ICSSR/CSIR or similar agencies.
